Fonterra engaged Railize to assess rail faults
within the Crawford Street cold storage
facility. The inspection aimed to ensure safe
and reliable crane operations by identifying
weld defects, dips, and rail surface
irregularities that could impact
performance.
The facility’s rail system supports heavy
operational demands, making condition
assessment critical to safety, efficiency, and
continuity of operations.
Railize delivered a combined manual survey and sensor-based
investigation:
̶ Manual measurement of rail dips at specific chainages (mm
depth left/top/right).
̶ Deployment of five IMUs on the stacker crane to record 3D
acceleration data during operation.
̶ Correlation of vibration responses with surveyed rail defects to
evaluate fault severity.
̶ Comparative analysis of forward vs backward crane operations.
̶ Collaboration with researchers from the University of Auckland
to implement and analyse the solution, bringing academic
expertise into applied industry practice.
